 What is Jiu Jitsu?

To me, It is definitely a form of expression, it’s an art form, and it’s also a sport.  A more practical definition is, it’s people rolling around on the floor with pyjama’s on trying to kill each other in a padded room, in a somewhat controlled environment.

How did you get into it?

Watching UFC, that is what got me interested, pretty much like a lot of people. I then found a gym and there was about 5 people there, so a lot of learning from DVD’s, videos, I didn’t have a clue what was going on at the start, but it just evolved from there.

 What kept you interested?

The challenge for sure, the mental and physical challenge, no move is undefeated, there is always new positions, new transitions, you can be super creative, it doesn’t matter if your big or small, large, tall, male, female, it fits everyone’s body type.

What’s the biggest takeaways you’ve learnt?

Being more patient, the cliché one is being more humble, you’re getting your ass kicked every day so it’s humbling.  Also, it makes you realise you can connect with anybody really, if you spend time with them and have a couple of experiences, it has a funny way of connecting people.
